Abstract:
Sagar Island in West Bengal is a critical area for coastal vulnerability assessment due to its unique geography and exposure to climate change risks. The island is the largest inhabited island in the Sundarban estuary, comprising 47 administrative villages. Studies have utilised IRSS data to analyse shoreline and land cover changes on Sagar Island. These assessments aim to identify areas prone to flooding, erosion, deposition and saltwater intrusion. Here, researchers have also developed vulnerability index values to quantify the island's susceptibility to coastal hazards. Some of the critical factors contributing to Sagar Island's vulnerability viz. wave properties, tidal range, beach morphodynamics, and sedimentary texture. To address these kinds of challenges, researchers have employed multi-dimensional parametric coastal risk assessment, incorporating high spatial resolution data, primary data and census data. These methods help identify areas requiring urgent attention and inform adaptation strategies.
