Abstract:
Forests are the most important and useful resource for sustainable livelihoods and socio-economic status in any region. The Present research paper is based on primary sources of data and deals with various forest products and their use pattern. This study explores the impact of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) on the socioeconomic status and means of subsistence of the tribes in the Surguja division of Chhattisgarh. The study draws attention to the problems, cultural importance, and economic advantages of using NTFPs through field surveys, interviews, and market analysis. This paper also highlights the importance of the major forest products, which include Timber and non-timber forest Products (NTFP), mainly firewood, fodder, wild fruits, resins, sub-minerals, eucalyptus, and medicinal plants used for various types of activity among the tribes. A Field survey on the Non-timber forest Products and medicinal plants used for different purposes was carried out during 2019–21. There are 200 tribal families selected from 15 forest villages in the Surguja division by a purposive method. While collecting information on Non-timber forest Products (NTFP) and medicinal plants, data was gathered from the head of the household, village chiefs (Gaon Burah), Baiga, and medicine men using semi-structured Schedules and detailed interaction with them. Data on the production of these products were gathered and presented, on the basis of the obtained data that have been analysed and presented in the form of tables and maps with the help of Statistics. Therefore, this study suggests that for the optimum use of forest products and their conservation, some policy measures must be implemented in the study area.
